Skate Shoes, Clothes, and Decks
Skateboarding has grown from an obscure pastime to one of the most popular alternative sports in the world. It is an activity that is practiced by millions of people around the world, and skateboarding competitions are regularly televised to tens of millions more. The vast majority of this growth has occurred in just the last two decades.

The rapid rise in popularity of skateboarding has generated an entire industry dedicated to the activity. Millions and millions of dollars are spent each year by skateboarders on new decks, wheels, and trucks, not to mention fashion items such as shoes and clothing. In fact, the clothing that has come out of the skateboarding world has become so popular that it has largely taken over the whole of teenage fashion. Anyone that has ever strolled through their local mall has seen the myriad stores that cater to this particular style.
Skate shoes have all but replaced the traditional “sneakers” of the past. There are literally dozens of manufacturers that create hundreds of different designs each year. They are sold through just every shoe store in the country and have become a niche unto themselves. For many retailers, they are their most popular product. These shoes are designed to be extremely durable in order to withstand the rigors of skateboarding, but are comfortable enough to wear every day.
Skate clothes, while a large segment of the market, aren’t necessarily “specialized”; meaning that they are not made specifically for skateboarding. Traditionally, skateboarders have just worn whatever was comfortable, whether that was jeans and a t-shirt, or shorts and a hoodie. This trend has changed little over the years, as these are still the preferred clothing of most skaters. However, t-shirts and hoodies can now be found with the logo of popular skate brands, or pictures of today’s best skaters. This is what most people refer to as “skate clothes”.
Skate decks are the heart of skateboarding. They are the platform on which the skater rides, and are available in dozens of styles and designs. Today, most skaters ride on either a freestyle board or a longboard, depending on their preferences. The freestyle boards are what one normally sees at the average skateboard competition and are used for performing various tricks. Longboards are designed primarily for cruising and are much larger than a freestyle deck. There are those, however, that prefer to go “retro” and these riders often prefer the old school decks of the 1980’s. These decks are larger than a freestyle board, but smaller than a longboard in most cases. They often incorporate larger wheels as well. Skateboards come in kits, or seperate parts you can put together yourself or; or you can purchase complete skateboards.
